It's WORKING! Hallelujah!!!

I'm outta here. I am so leaving early tomorrow ... I have dozens of packages to wrap, and clearly I'm not doing any tonight!

Where are you off to?

The Mr.'s sister is married to a Lutheran minister. He has 3 small churches to tend, way out in western Maryland, and they are so busy at Xmas that we meet with them later on for a gift exchange and family face time. Tomorrow's the big day ... it's about a 3 hour drive, and we prefer not to stay over, so it will be a long day.

It went pretty well. It was a little awkward because we had new relatives there - you may recall that I mentioned that my mom-in-law had remarried back in September. We had her husband's two daughters and their families, and I don't think they'd seen us at our usual rambunctious level before: I'm much the most quiet of the bunch, and people do a lot of teasing and even some rough-housing. (Mostly my husband and his brother wrestling with the kids, and people throwing balls of ripped-up wrapping paper at each other - that kind of thing.)

The best part was I made my sister-in-law (the minister's wife) laugh and laugh, which was good - she has a tough life, not much money and lots of stress. She hadn't been very good about letting me know what she wanted for Xmas, and I warned her that she'd better let me know or she'd get stuck with socks and underwear (which is a running gag - the Mr.'s family was poor growing up, so their mom always bought them socks and underwear for Xmas, along with one or two tiny gifts). So I got her a some nice clothes (which is what I usually do) but I also got her a couple of pairs of panties and packed them in a very fancy little box, with fabric ribbon and metallic paper and the whole 9 yards. Inside, they were wrapped with tissue paper and I sealed them with a sticker on which I wrote "Young lady, I warned you what would happen if you didn't get more specific about what you wanted!" She opened the box and read that and laughed so hard that she couldn't explain herself for about 5 minutes. It was great.

Presents from my in-laws are always a mixed bag, but I did get the "Complete Book One Collection" of Avatar on DVD, and Michael Chabon's new historical fantasy Gentlemen of the Road.

Oh, that sounds like a really fun time! Congrats on the Avatar loot, and that story with your sister in law cracked me up! Where they sexy panties, or plain ones?
Jan. 15th, 2008 09:52 pm (UTC)

Naaah, just plain ones, one beige and one lavender. Land's End has a feature where you can search their on-sale stuff for specifics, and I had it on "Women's - Plus Size," sorted from cheapest to most expensive, just to see what was available that she might be able to use. And when the panties came up, I went "Hmmm!"

(But she would actually wear sexy ones, as long as they weren't crotchless or something ... she's very un-shy for a minister's wife.)

Whee, Avatar! Hurry up and watch those and you can catch the second half of the current season when it starts airing. ;)

(And your cold seems to be making the rounds...last night I was thinking the sniffles were just my allergies being cranky but today I'm absolutely miserable. Bleargh!)

Awww! Are you feeling any better now?

Jan. 15th, 2008 11:19 pm (UTC)
Bleargh...yes and no. Still congested and a little sinus pressure throat soreness and general fatigue-and-achiness, but at least the horrible constant sniffling and sneezing is mostly gone. It also hit at just the right, or should I say wrong, time that it's impossible to tell how much of the achiness and fatigue is from the bug and how much is the usual hormonal thing. Oh well. I can deal with the rest of the lingering symptoms now that I'm not just sneezing every five seconds...

Sounds like you had what we had. The aches were pretty surprising, from a virus that didn't manage to raise a fever.

Hope you're better now!
