Note to Self

Self, although you identify strongly with the 20-something guys in your favorite reading material (of various types), you are actually a 55-year-old woman who has been off her game for the past few months because of health issues.

This means that if you are suddenly struck by the fact that there is a waist-high counter in front of the primping mirror in the women's restroom at work, and there is absolutely no one around, and you wonder whether you can still clear that counter with a front snap kick, your body is not going to appreciate it when you try it to see.

The ligament on the lower inside of my left knee (the medial collateral ligament, I think, from the diagram I found online) is only just a little bit sore this morning, although I was hobbling for a bit last night. (And yes, I did clear the counter with my kick. Go me — you silly person you!)

That is the medial collateral ligament. Ask me how I know. :)

I'm glad you didn't do much damage. And congrats on clearing the counter.

Yeah, you would think that the recent fall onto my butt that put me partially out of commission for two weeks would have been enough of a warning!

So what did you do to your medial collateral ligament?

I wrenched my left knee when I stopped myself from falling after slipping on wet leaves, leading to physical therapy for a damaged MCL. I might have been better off falling.

I still can do a roundhouse kick as high as my head. Provided I properly warm up first, as evidenced by the fact that the last time I tried it without warming up first, several years ago, I pulled a groin muscle. >.<

I was never very good at any of the things that required flexibility, so being able to do a front snap at waist height was an accomplishment for me even back in the day!

Ow, yeah, the groin would have been worse. I think it was the abrupt direction change in the "snap" part of it that did me in.

I was good at flexibility, but not at strength or speed.

I broke my toe on my sensei with a front snap kick. Oops.

I was (and still am to some extent) strong for a woman. I remember overpowering a small female black belt once with an Aikido pin that wasn't good enough to have worked except for the size and strength differences. She looked at me and laughed: 'You brute!" Then she showed me where I went wrong. She pinned and held me all right!
