More LJ News ...

From astronewt on lj_releases:

More information on Friends feed, plus paid account information

A better response than I had feared ... and yet, as many have noted, why is this not in LJNews?

Probably because they don't want to actually announce that they will be forcing the change.

I'm so sick of LJ's games. I have my f-list set up exactly as I want it. That new 'feed' makes me sick to my stomach and slapping up a background image and playing with text size ain't gonna fix it. Why do they always have to wreck stuff? Arrrgh. /old and cranky

I'm certainly in the category of people who are wondering why the hell don't they leave well enough alone?! On the other hand, it's obvious that they are not going to do that. Like any other product that's meant to have some financial gain for the people producing it, they think they need to make it faster / bigger / shinier and are oblivious to the fact that the changes made pursuant to that goal won't actually make anything better.

Which is why every time I find a product - say, a facial moisturizer - that I really like, I know it will be discontinued. Very few products stay the same over time, and the ones that do - say, Scott Tissue toilet paper and Ivory soap - do so because their producers have plenty of other irons in the fire. LJ has only LJ, and they see all these people signing up for Facebook (groan) and Tumblr, and they want a piece of that pie.

I use LJ enough that I feel like it's a piece of me - I go into withdrawal whenever DDOS take it down - yet I know all too well that at $20 per year from me (the price of 1 to 4 lunches near my office in downtown DC, depending on whether you go to Micky D's or Thunder Grill), there isn't any way that they feel they owe me squat.

Of course, being this sensible doesn't do anything for how crabby the whole thing makes me feel. >sigh<

I share your crab.

Yeah, my crabbiness is right there with you.

I couldn't find my soap anymore, tried a new one out of desperation, and promptly got a rash. That's sort of how I feel with the LJ change. Dammit, I just want to wash my hands, why make it hard, world? In this case, dammit, we just want to read our friends journals! Why make it hard?

I'm sympathetic to their business plight--but there's so much they could do to grow their business instead of driving it away. Fix known bugs, attract new users, create new features. But nooooo, we gotta force down a change nobody wants. Depressing.

I'm not sure what their business plight is, exactly. They're the major if not the only blogging tool in Russia, which is a huge user base. They've shown that they don't care about the English-speaking users, and therefore any other countries that must perforce blog bilingually. If they want business from the non-Russian world, maybe they could try communicating with it more?

Or do they not twig that people won't abandon FB and twitter for something that merely resembles FB and twitter? I mean, why would they? Users know that if FB isn't broken it doesn't need fixing /or/ replacing.
