All those Little LJ Custom User Heads?

... look mighty white to me.

(OK, maybe one of them is sort of beige. One.)

Check your inbox for the junk mail from LJ. You know the little people heads that appear next to your account name when you reply? Like the one that's right up next to the words hikari_mibu in your comment here? You can now pay to get different little heads there. Only they're all almost all as pale as the driven snow, so too bad if anyone might like a brown one.

No, this isn't a big deal, but it would have been so easy to do it otherwise - except that apparently no one thought about. And that says something right there.

>> the discriminatory aspect <<

Yep. I feel opinionated about it because I select clip art/Creative Commons art for Web publications at work, and we try to make sure that all our employees can "see themselves" at least some of the time in the pictures we use.

Especially given that these heads are just teeny little pixel clusters, it wouldn't have been very hard for the folks that made them to give a damn and introduce some variety.

As I said, it's not exactly a big deal ... but it jumped out at me.

FYI, not everyone subscribes to LJ's news-spam or does emailed comment notifications, nee-chan! *koffs*

Here's the original news post, just in case anyone else who resembles that situation is wondering what you're referring to: http://news.livejournal.com/130231.html

Errr ... yeah. Ooopsie. What you said.

(I figure I'd rather know what they're doing - or say they're doing - than not know. And if I don't e-mail the comments, I'll miss most of them.)

Hee, no worries! I suspect weirdos like me who can't stand the mailbox clutter in general are definitely in the minority, but there are probably at least a few other folks who unsubscribed immediately from all the puffery-heavy official LJ comms and count on hearing about anything important or controversial via more focused kvetching on their f-list. ;)

The layout I'm using on Dreamwidth replaces those heads in the comments with slices of cake. XD

Mine become little golden sunbursts!

Mine just look like little puffy snowmen on DW. What does DW call those things, so I can see whether I can change mine?

I actually don't know what they're called. I can look at the stylesheet I use though since I know they're controlled in there. I know DW uses open source icons for those user heads.

It looks like people in the various news/suggestions/etc. comms on DW also refer to them as userhead icons or userheads; however, as far as I can tell from a quick looksee, I don't think there's any way to alter them without digging into the CSS. (Search through the stylesheets for references to "http://s.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png", that's the one you're trying to override.)

Interestingly enough, I just hacked away at the crane comm for a test, and it looks like LJ rolling out sitewide the pay userheads that have been available on the Cyrillic services side for a while hasn't come along with any disabling of folks doing their own tweaks for free -- I just swapped all the defaults there to teeny-tiny orange cranes. ;)

I love the cranes, btw!

Hee, thanks! It took a little trial and error to get them shrunk down that small and still look vaguely crane-like. :)

It's been noted, yes.

I found a few people complaining about them in a fairly civilized fashion in the comments on the news post ... did they get called out elsewhere?

It's something that could have been handled so easily ... .

I can't remember where. It was a couple weeks ago though since those user heads have been around for a while on the Cyrillic side.
