I Had to Ignore Someone on Facebook Today

When someone says something like "Are you for human rights? Or for individual rights? There is a huge difference. The two cannot occupy the same space," I don't feel like listening to them any longer.

(Person is definitely on the conservative/Libertarian side ... the Young Lady showed me how to hide the posts.)

What does that even mean? I do not think I want to know. Urgh.

Edited to add: Oh, libertarian. Yes. Now I get it. *sigh* I do not talk to them either. Makes me too upset.

I'm just freaked out that she's being this way - she didn't used to be, back in high school. I wonder what sort of strange dystopic epiphany she's had.

That doesn't even make sense unless you assume that the only way to coexist and further the rights of others is to be completely self-sacrificing and have no esteem or regard for individuals. At which point, the rights you support are those of an abstract concept.

I know that hoping for a complete workable balance between the two is overly idealistic, but we can certainly work toward that goal. Given her other posts, her point would seem to be that those who are for human rights are somehow trampling on her individual rights.

So Facebook has basically become Usenet with flash games? Fun.

(Where are you even running into this charmer -- a friends-of-friends sort of situation?)

Oh, FB got political very quickly. Fortunately most of my friends there (old school friends, relatives, my old gaming buddies, and a fairly solid online crossover crowd from LJ and Shejidan and a couple of other places) don't tend to get terribly political. But this one is like multiple obnoxious posts every day.

She's an old high school friend, and she certainly wasn't this way back then. The Mr. says no one makes a better conservative than a liberal who's been mugged - I'm wondering whether something similar happened to her along the way.

Hmmm, is it possible that she's one of those folks who gets strongly influenced by other people in her life -- maybe her current social circle, SO, that sort of thing are more lib/rightward leaning than her parents and high school/neighborhood crowd? I've known more than a few people who just sort of went with the flow of their parents'/communities religious and/or political views up through high school who ended up doing a pretty drastic 180 in college or later. And even in the absence of a traumatic trigger, the level of involvement and fixation you're describing has something of the ring of convert's zeal about it...

I'm thinking, on the basis of her other posts, that she feels that laws that support human rights trample on her individual rights somehow. The idea that we can't work to balance the two is what's got me ticked.

But having to serve black people at your restaurant infringes on your individual write to be an asshole!

I am not even kidding. This is the 'logic.'

There was some discussion remarkably similar to that on "Alas a Blog" today - do you read that?

I do sometimes. I think I was reading Balloon Juice the other day.

Pretty much! Ta-Nehisi Coates has some good stuff on it.

What is that I don't even

yes I know that's a meme, but it honestly fits

Yes, that's completely justifiable here! She's an old high school friend, and she was very kind about a number of life issues when we first reconnected on FB. But recently it's been all Libertarian/conservative all the time. I got tired of seeing something outrageous every time I stopped by to check on people.
