Time to Cull the Flock ... waaah!

So, in honor of finally blogging the manga series Loveless, I made a new icon of that bundle of contradictions, Kaido Kio Kaedo:

That was my 115th userpic. I have no more userpic slots, so I have to get rid of some. This makes me feel bad, because I get sentimental about the damnedest things.

I seem to have a number of icons for being annoyed or pissy, but most of the time when I want to tell folks about that type of feeling, I tend to go for an icon that adds some dimension to my feeling. And there are some icons I simply just don't use much. Finally, I have ka-jillion Gojyo icons, and the one below is my least favorite (not least because no one ever seemed to get the joke ... ).

Anyone wanna try to talk me out of ditching any of these?

I think everyone should have a kajillion Gojyo icons. >_> So don't ditch that one. There can't be enough Byakuya in the world. So don;t ditch him either. Umm. I can't help you with the Yultide one, because Yuletide 2007 was two years ago ;)I don't think I have ever seen you use the top center one. But I like the LOL! one and the Pffft! one. Hermione (?) doesn't do much for me, and I don't know enough about the other three to comment.

I may have to ditch Byakuya anyway ... I don't bother spending a lot of time on how/why Bleach is sexist (oh really?), but Byakuya's combo of first protecting Rukia so she doesn't get a chance to develop and then tossing her onto the slag heap once honor was involved did bother me. And I don't end up using that icon much, so deleting it would have minimal impact.

That's Luna Lovegood, from HP. At some point, I thought I needed an HP icon - not sure why. I think she's doomed, though.

What if I told you I was ditching that one Gojyo so I could add one of the adorable 585 chibi icons that nanfoodle made from sarubaby's art?

The LOL is Yuan from SDK ... he shows up late in the series, when the Kyo-tachi are deep inside the Mibu lands. That's him in the foreground.

Oh! I haven't gotten to Yuan yet, so I'd always vaguely assumed that icon was Benitora with a costume change -- something about the sleevelessness and body language (plus the recognizable art style) really made me think of him. XD

Well, I can't argue about Bleach being sexist, because it is. That became pretty clear during the first major arc when previously badass Rukia got locked up in an impregnable tower like a damsel in distress, waiting for her 15-year-old savior to rescue her. >_>

I do like Byakuya, and he comes around in the end and realizes he's been an ass. I like Renji better, though. There's some icon out there that scans down Renji's body to his crotch and then flashes "Bankai, Baby!" I like it a lot. >_>

But back to your icons. I adore those chibi. They are so, so cute! (I even hate chibi, but my icy heart is melted by those.) So if you were planning to ditch your Gojyo for one of those, then yeah!! I should snag one or two also. The 585 one with the little hearts is adorable.

I love that Momiji icon. Aside from that, I think you're making good choices! (it's haaaard.)
Jan. 12th, 2010 03:35 am (UTC)

... but I never use that Momiji (whereas I use this one all the time).

It's so tough!

(I'm probably also going to ditch the Dutch icon I currently have in favor of the one I made for the Black Lagoon icon post. I wish there was some better color art of him.)

Re: Black Lagoon and better art for Dutch (and Benny!) ... right here.

Looks like I'm gonna be making some more Black Lagoon icons ... .

Jan. 12th, 2010 05:56 pm (UTC)
Oh, what a great little smile. Amen, hallelujah, peanut butter! And is this a dagger one of my girl's kukris I see before me Benny? XD
Jan. 13th, 2010 03:15 am (UTC)

That's definitely a "What's a nice Jewish boy like you doing in spot like this?" picture! And yes, I suspect Shenhua is just offstage ... .

Jan. 13th, 2010 07:40 am (UTC)
The expressions and body language are just priceless for all of them. Dutch is so grounded and steady and almost relaxed holding the rear guard in a firefight, no wasted effort, while Revy's all aggressive manic energy, throwing herself into the front bodily with a deranged grin. Benny's perfectly casual and relaxed about standing back and staying out of the way of the fighters, while poor Rock is literally off-balance. (And Shenhua, I'm sure, is being a show-off by aiming at Benny's cigarette, and snickering to herself.)

That picture is win.

I know! What great timing, too! (I've been to that site before, and that wasn't there earlier.)

Calcifer and SDK should stay, as should Manji. And I haven't looked, but I'm sure you have a plethora of Gojyos.
Jan. 12th, 2010 12:14 pm (UTC)

I may do a different Manji icon ... I never seem to use this one (I use my Rin icons fairly often, and the new Doa one quite frequently).

I've mostly used Calcifer for talking on the DWJ comm, and that hasn't been very active lately.

Teh pretty Shinrei was one of my earliest, before I had an idea of how I really wanted to use my icons. The feeling it conveys doesn't get used much at all.

See, you have no idea how important Gojyo (and Gojyo with Hakkai) is to me ... there's a degree of identification. I'm only thinking of getting rid of him because I like my new King of Hearts one better, and because I want to pick up one of the adorable chibi icons that nanfoodle made from Sarubaby's art! XD

I'd say to ditch Luna. She's kinda creepy in that icon, haha.

I don't like Fruits Basket but Momiji is awfully cute in that icon. The only other character I recognize besides those two is Gojyo (is that a Hot Topic reference?) so I'd definitely say to give Luna the boot.
Jan. 10th, 2010 07:20 am (UTC)
Also, like avierra mentioned, I'm not so sure you need the 2007 Yuletide icon unless you're keeping it for commemorative reasons. ~_^
Jan. 12th, 2010 12:22 pm (UTC)

Nah, of course you're right: the old Yuletide icon is a goner, although I like the art (scanned from an old card). And the Yuletide posts that use it are easy enough to locate, with the tags, so I can replace the icons with this one.

Jan. 12th, 2010 12:20 pm (UTC)

Yes, I edited Hot Topic's logo for that! I was so proud of myself ... and no one noticed! >sigh< Although to be fair, I would never have thought of it myself if I didn't have a teenager in the house who's fond of HT's band T shirts.

Trouble is, I never use the PFFFT! When I want to do something like that, I like to use a friendly icon (usually my Yuya/Mahiro BFF icon - the blonde and the brunette hugging each other and laughing) and then put :p in the message ... it's milder and friendlier that way.

Yeah, I think Luna is doomed. I'm not sure why I wanted a Harry Potter icon at that point.

Jan. 11th, 2010 03:39 pm (UTC)
I don't dislike any of them, and am particularly fond of that Gojyo one (but I'm very biased there as the source image was the basis for my first Saiyuki-themed wallpaper back when I first fell into this obsession, so clearly it's something I quite enjoy looking at! *grins*) But I'd definitely join the chorus wondering why you would want to use up a slot on an icon that's three years past its use-by date...
Jan. 12th, 2010 12:29 pm (UTC)

Well, that was my first Yuletide, and I also liked the art. But it's easy enough to hunt down the posts on here that use it, and replace their icons.

Part of my problem with replacing icons is that nowadays, I pick them very carefully to go with the post I'm making, and I don't like the thought of having some of them revert to my default Yukimura and his sleepy, secretive little smile. When I first starting making them, I didn't have a good feel for how I'd want to use them.

See, the thing about that Gojyo for me is that I like this one >points< much better, myself. And I wanted to add one of the icons nanfoodle did from sarubaby's chibis - I don't have any good funny 585 icons, just my various painfully sincere ones. (I wish I could replace icons one-for-one across LJ - I'd love to re-do "no longer alone," because although I like the sentiment, I've learned a lot more about making icons since then.)

Oh, if you just want to upgrade an icon with something equivalent, try deleting the old version and then using STRICTLY IDENTICAL keywords when you upload the shiny new hotness. Unless LJ has seriously tweaked something since the last time I did this, that should work across the board to update whereever you used it, even in comments.

(And you do know that you can go into top-level posts, in your own LJ or communities, and manually edit the icon used, yes? That doesn't help any with comments, and I don't have a paid account so I don't know if the new edit feature lets you tweak icons as well as text on comments that haven't been responded to...but being able to tweak the most visible top-level stuff is better than nothing.)
Jan. 13th, 2010 03:20 am (UTC)

Yes, I figured that one out, about editing icons - you can edit icons on your actual posts on your own LJ (or a community on which you have posting privileges) any time, and you can edit your comments on other people's as long as there have been no replies. But if you edit a reply, the user on the parent comment or post gets a duplicate e-mail of your comment (presuming she or he has e-mail notifications set).

But I didn't know about giving them the same info when you upload one ... I can try that, I'll just copy all the fields into a text file. I do that with replacing PDFs with updated versions on our intranet site, so that the way the search indexes them is consistent. Thanks!
