This is a pretty good fantasy, seemingly aimed at the 13-16-year-old audience ... except that in the U.S., something aimed at that age group usually wouldn't feature a warrior who changes sex frequently (although there was Dr. Occult/Rose Spiritus in the original Books of Magic, come to think of it ...) and female frontal nudity from the waist up. Takiko Okuda, an older teen (there's considerable confusion about her age, but she seems to be about 17) in early 20th-century Japan, is having an unhappy life. Her mother is gravely ill, her scholarly father neglects his family for his work, and a recent move from Tokyo to the country has landed Takiko in a new school populated by hicks who resent her. A strange series of events lands her in the middle of the story described in her father's latest book, with Takiko now in the role of the heroine: the priestess of Genbu who must gather the seven Celestial Warriors to save a nation that Takiko never knew existed.

I'm enjoying the story and am interested in how it will all turn out, but I don't feel terribly passionate about it.

Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden, vols. 1-5 (review)

Once I got over the initial shock of the bare breasts that show up frequently - not to mention the interesting folk remedy of lowering someone's fever by pressing one's bare torso to that of the patient, which turns Takiko's charitable impulse early in the first volume into an embarrassingly close encounter with a handsome but raffish young man (the aforementioned sex-changing warrior) - this really did turn out to be very much in the mode of Susan Cooper's "The Dark Is Rising" series, with some darker twists that recall Phillip Pullman or the more serious Diana Wynne Jones books. There is considerably more romance - it is aimed at teenaged girls - and the mysticism is Chinese/Japanese rather than Arthurian/Celtic, but we have the reluctant, bewildered, somewhat passive young protagonist and a sort of Plot Coupon quest (find the seven warriors rather than find the six signs, but the resemblance remains). The one thing that seems to be missing is the wise old mentor: instead, Takiko learns from the warriors as she collects them and from several female storyteller types: the mother of one of the warriors, for example (finally - a role that I might plausibly cosplay!), and a couple of different tiny, doll-like oracles.

I have a number of questions that I hope will eventually be answered. Does Limdo/Uruki's sex-changing ability have any significance beyond the fact that it really helps him disguise himself? Why are all these female mystics little tiny girls? Who is this mysterious (and rather sexy!) half-blind guy, Hagus, who's trailing Takiko and her party, and collecting the Celestial Warriors' powers as he goes? And why does Takiko end up taking a bath several times in every volume? (OK, that's a slight exaggeration ... but not much!)

Aiside from Hagus - who's still too much of a cipher to be an emotional favorite - I like Uruki and Hikitsu (a Celestial Warrior with a magical eye that's usually hidden under a patch) best, and I'm developing a fondness for Uruki's sensible servant Soren. Uruki and Takiko are very much in lu-u-urve, and some of their scenes do generate a little heat. Takiko's not a complete ditz, and she does have some basic weapon skills (with the naginata) but she also spends an awful lot of time being rescued. On the other hand, I don't know that she spends any more time in that position than does young Will Stanton in The Dark Is Rising. It's easy to blame her passivity on the fact that she's female, but I think it also has to do with the particular type of role she's playing.

Anyway, this is fun, and I'll certainly keep reading. But I don't find myself, when I finish a volume of this, immediately going back to re-read and revel in my favorite bits. And that's what I've found myself doing with the manga series that are my favorites.

That's sort of how I feel about the whole Fushigi Yuugi franchise in general - it's cute and interesting, and there's some really good fanfic out there (especially for the first series, because back in the dark ages, it was one of the few manga availible), but ultimately it just doesn't grab me in the way a more shounen-oriented adventure story does.

I don't follow the Japanese version too closely, so I'm not sure if Uruki's magical sex change ability has any real significance... all of the warriors in the Fushigi Yuugi series are named after stars, and the Genbu constellation includes Uruki, which is written with the character for "woman"... so I guess it wouldn't make sense for a guy to have that symbol!

I like Shigi and Hien best~ And I especially like that Shigi sent the fandom into hilarious fits with the whole eunuch thing. Typically, I end up liking side pairings more than the main pairing in shoujo manga...

Tsk! Was that biz about Shigi in one of the current volumes? How the hell did I miss it - me with my Persian Boy fixation? I need to go back through these! That certainly gives the Young Lady a reason for her comment that "he looks just like a girl." (I just figured hey, it's another one of those manga guys ... .)

Isn't this series kind of stuck? The info I've been able to find online says that two more chapters were published in Japan last summer, but that's it. Are they going to continue it, do you know?

Everyone is just a little too cute and doll-faced ... I think that's part of why I like Hagus and Hikitsu - the stuff on their faces breaks up that procelain perfection thing!

Yeah, I could see Shigi and Hien ... the vibe is definitely there.

Yep, and all of the yaoi fangirls had collective shit fits. Of course, I had been actively avoiding all newer Watase Yuu stuff until after it happened, so I wasn't a part of the lolz... ^^; Katie is a big, big Watase Yuu fan, but I've never figured out why... part of it is nostalgia, because for all of its faults, the original series had some really memorable characters that are reflected in the current incarnation. But I've never been able to make it through any of Watase's non-historical fantasy series.

Unfortunately Watase has sort of hit a creative roadblock... I think it's probably occured to her that Takiko and everybody else have to die horrible, nasty deaths according to flashbacks in the first series... it's pretty common for manga artists to just abandon series when things get unpleasant, though. I read a lot of historical manga about the Shinsengumi, for instance, and few manga artists who write about them seem to be able to deal with the fact that historically, almost everyone dies. So they just... stop. It's kind of disappointing.

Watase is very cute, and sometimes her characters can look alike (nowhere near as bad as in Fruits Basket, though, where I've gone almost entire volumes without being able to tell who someone actually is!) so it's no accident that my favorite character from the original series is a guy who covers himself in so much Chinese opera makeup that you can't tell what he really looks like. ^^;;

Hmmm, I think you're still several issues past where the available English language books end ... vol. 5 ends just where the brothelkeeper has been revealed as the latest Celestial Warrior; I htink it's Chapter 16. this forum has translations etc. for several issues beyond that. So why don't we have a new book with some of these chapters? Oh well, I guess I can just read this translations, but I want the picture ... even if they are a little bland and "samey."

I wouldn't want to read tragic tales exclusively, but a tragedy can lend depth. Where would SDK be without Fubuki's and Hishigi's deaths, not to mention Kyo voluntarily going down the tubes in #306?

Hm. I may have to check this out, despite my general ambivalence about Yuu Watase...I think part of it may be that her artwork is a little bland sometimes, but that's just me and my "quirky artist" thing, I guess.

Bland, yes, kinda. Pretty little doll faces ... . Do you follow Saiyuki/Saiyuki Reload? Minekura's artwork is the least bland I've seen since I started reading manga. And I'm a big fan of Akamine Kamijyo (Samurai Deeper Kyo - whence comes Akari, who's screaming very un-blandly in my icon ... ), who seems to use a really good compromise between the shoujo and shonen types.

Vagabond has gorgeous artwork, but it's more like conventional illustration than like cartooning.
