Name That Tune meme! (sans iPod!)

I don't have an iPod, but I did this anyway! The process involved generating random numbers with an Excel spreadsheet ... .

Like everyone else, I skipped things that weren't in English.

  1. Put your music player on Random.
  2. Post the first line from the first 32 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song
  3. Let everyone guess what song and artist the lines come from.
  4. Bold the songs when someone guesses correctly.

And ... here we go:

  1. The daylight's fading slowly, but time with you is standing still
  2. We're coming to the edge, running on the water
  3. If you loose your faith, babe, you can have mine,
  4. I remember the nights I watched as you lay sleeping
  5. She can kill with a smile, she can wound with her eyes
  6. You ought to see your face; you ought to hear your voice
  7. Workin’ Friday night down at the Alley
  8. Operator, well, could you help me place this call?
  9. It was 100 degrees as we sat beneath a willow tree
  10. "The problem is all inside your head", she said to me
  11. She says it's been so long she can't remember when
  12. Desert loving in your eyes all the way
  13. Darling don't you understand, I feel so ill at ease
  14. Turned on the weather man just after the news
  15. He had a dream haunting him at night
  16. While the poor people sleepin' with the shade on the light
  17. I've been sitting up waiting for my sugar to show
  18. Hey, your glass is empty / It's a hell of a long way home
  19. Walking like a ghost in my own movie
  20. Lights out tonight, trouble in the heartland
  21. Just a kiss, just a kiss / I have lived just for this
  22. I am just a poor boy, though my story's seldom told
  23. You look frenzied, you look frazzled, peaked as any alp
  24. Is it too much to ask? I want a comfortable bed that won't hurt my back
  25. When the road gets dark, and you can no longer see
  26. Out on the street - you'd better get on home
  27. The language of love slips from my lover's tongue
  28. And now I'm all alone again, nowhere to turn, no one to go to
  29. Tell me, where did Helen go? This is where she had her dwelling
  30. If I could turn the page / In time then I'd rearrange just a day or two
  31. Johnny take a walk with your sister the moon
  32. I'll buy you six bay mares to put in your stables

Ah ha ha, I sense a Paul Simon fan...

5. Billy Joel, "Always A Woman"

8. Jim Croce, "Operator"

10. Paul Simon, "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover"

12. Culture Club, "Karma Chameleon"

15. October Project, "Funeral In His Heart" *chuckles*

22. Simon & Garfunkel, "The Boxer"

31. U2, "Mysterious Ways"

100% correct!

(Yeah, I laughed when "Funeral" came up ... it's like "And if that's not enough to make you recall the song, there's some more in the LJ layout!")

Hee, after using that song in my 585/10K fanmix, it's pretty much permanently burned into my brain. I could probably recite the lyrics in my sleep. ;)

It pops up on my Playlist of the Mind fairly frequently, along with several of the others. I'm very stuck on "Ariel" for some reason, which is funny because it's kind of a dorky song. I think "Return to Me" is my favorite overall, "Bury My Lovely" the most affecting, and "Eyes of Mercy" the one that is most sympatico to my usual operating wavelength.

1. the corrs - breathless (or maybe it's actually a cover, and you're hearing the original... who knows?)

might know the others, but no bells ringing
Sep. 30th, 2008 07:58 pm (UTC)

Yep, it was the Corrs I had in mind ... I have the VH1 Concert CD, with them performing it live!

heh, I only remember it because I bought the single at the same time I got The Marshall Matter EP... strangely enough, both cds are missing now...
Oct. 1st, 2008 11:28 am (UTC)

Heh, Marshall Mathers and the Corrs - what a combination!

Oct. 1st, 2008 03:38 pm (UTC)
heh, you should see the contents of my iPod then^^
Oct. 2nd, 2008 11:38 am (UTC)

I'm beginning to think I must have quite a range myself, given how few things people are guessing ... .

Sep. 30th, 2008 05:37 pm (UTC)
9. Death Cab for Cutie, Crooked Teeth

Sep. 30th, 2008 07:59 pm (UTC)

Yes indeed! If I ever do get an iPod, at least half that album will end up on it.

Sep. 30th, 2008 08:44 pm (UTC)
I preferred The Photo Album, but Plans had some good songs, too.
Oct. 1st, 2008 11:30 am (UTC)

Hmmm, maybe I'll put The Photo Album on my holiday list ... the relatives like it when we want CDs or DVDs because then they don't have to think too much ... . (Really, it's not their fault - we're out and out geeks, and they're not. It's just how life is ... .)

Is #2 a James Taylor song? Possibly off Hourglass?
Sep. 30th, 2008 09:31 pm (UTC)

No, sorry. More or less the right era, but not the right song or singer.

Oct. 1st, 2008 02:04 am (UTC)
Huh...it sounds so familiar.
Oct. 1st, 2008 02:06 am (UTC)
Ah! I cheated and looked it up and...wow, I was pretty damn close :P
Oct. 1st, 2008 02:19 am (UTC)

Yes - in that way, very close!

4. I Will Not Forget You, Sarah McLachlan

18. Good Enough, Sarah McLachlan
Oct. 2nd, 2008 11:50 am (UTC)
(tunes meme)

Right, and of course, right!

All my Sarah McLachlan albums are at work - they're soothing for me there. (You might like October Project, btw ... same sort of dreaminess, but the lead has a stunning alto voice and the emotional intensity is ratcheted up a few notches.)
