It is good to hand down the important things in life to the next generation.
I just introduced The Young Lady to They Fight Crime.
(The impulse was inspired, I should add, by oyceter's recent book review.)
Went to http://everystockphoto.com to get a picture of someone weeding for an article on being active (weeding was one of the non-sports activities listed).
Searched on weeding. In search results, found many pictures of people of many ages, all dressed up.
After some consideration, realized that someone meant to tag those wedding instead.
XD
... from an article I was writing for Asian Pacific Heritage Month:
Via the Young Lady and cracked.com ... .
( Cut for big, delightfully silly Photoshop effort ... )Wow, I owe someone a huge hug and kiss! How wonderful!
It will surprise none of Jame's fans to discover that she is an Action Girl and Extraordinarily Empowered Girl, as well as an example of Dark Is Not Evil, Ensign Newbie (in To Ride a Rathorn), I Have Many Names, I Just Want To Be Normal, Last Of Her Kind, Person Of Mass Destruction, and Walking Disaster Area.
I'm not sure how or why it came - maybe because of having signed up for the reading account. Does anyone know how long these things are good for? I should think they'd expire at some point.
Or set a timer or something.
It's a much more pernicious timewaster than LJ, and it's not as socially satisfying as chat.
I have an idea for this week's saiyuki_time challenge, I have things I could be blogging (my next book for the 50books_poc reading challenge, Black Lagoon, SDK 32, Reload 9), I have music links from smillaraaq that I could be chatting about (plus she's reading a book that I'd love to discuss some more).
And I have not done one iota of any of it!!!

Stupid layout is because all of the sudden, HTML unnumbered list isn't working!
Exactly a month ago, I posted that this wonderful manga/anime art resource had gone under because of financial difficulties: she was starting to have to pay too much for hosting. Fortunately, she took the suggestion of a number of her fans and put up donation buttons for donations via PayPal (on the upper left of the gallery page linked below or on the bottom of main Aethereality site page). I view it is a subscription of sorts - I'm happy to put something into the hat because I've used her materials so often.
Anyway, if you make icons or wallpapers or banners and haven't checked this out, you should - she has some lovely stuff:
And of course, if you use her stuff and can afford to donate, please do ... .
Folks, you may recall me recommending the manga art gallery at Aethereality.net as a resource for making icons, etc. I haven't been able to get into it for a couple of weeks, and I just found out why. Posted on main page of the site is this notice:
Aethereality Gallery is now closed. It is using way too much CPU resource for shared hosting that Dreamhost can no longer support.
By "resource", I'm not talking about space or bandwidth. I have plenty of those already. Unless I have $40 to shell out for private server hosting each month, which I don't, I can't bring the gallery back. Sorry.
I've told her (as have several other users) that I'd be willing to help pay for this to be back up. If anyone else has any suggestions for her, please let her know. This was an amazing resource, and it's terrible that it's gone!
For the librarians and paper-writing students of all stages: Jocelyn from neilgaimanboard reports that on Worldcat, if you 'look something up, and click on the "Cite This Item" link, it formats the citation for you in all sorts of different styles, including APA!'
(A note on the example: "cheese" is a neilgaimanboard leitmotif, like "Sanzo" elsewhere, but not nearly as sexy ... .)
I'm on my blippin' dial-up for the first time in months ... I guess I'll kick back and write a review or something to post later. I'd forgotten how long everything takes with this connection.
I couldn't think of a clever title for this that wouldn't make me hate myself in the morning. Especially since all the news services have beat me to the worksafe ones already. So, here we go, courtesy of my friends at Shejidan:
A purrfect place for fanciers of felines
Or, if you prefer:
Calico Café Caters to Cat Cuddlers Craving Kitten Companionship (this one has a link to the cafe's official Japanese website)
Oh Japan, never change ... .
Someone's writing a thesis on fanfiction! At Georgetown University, no less! Give her a hand by filling out this survey - it just asks for general demographic info and info about your favorite fandoms and fics.

emeraldtome* has posted a vid of a really great speech that has nothing to do with the election or partisan politics. Teacher and poet Taylor Mali gives his no-holds-barred answer to the lawyer who scornfully asked him "What do teachers make?"
*Better known in this space as "The Young Lady."
Hmmm ... this thing is pretty damn random, although it usually gets the syllable count right. It ends up ending sentences prepositions with - a lot. But this one made a certain amount of sense, even though the syllable count is off if you make even a half-hearted attempt to pronounce the Japanese word correctly:
He's armed with a
paope that looks unnervingly
like a brush painting
A paope is one of the artifacts that the spirit-world beings use in the manga Hoshin Engi ... so this could be a very interesting plot twist!
Oh, another good one (punctuation added):
Dakki, who is quite
the gourmet cook, is having
a little trouble

I think it was comedian Lenny Bruce who said that "Italians are Jewish," so I guess this works (he had a schtick where he was dividing all the cultures of the world into Jewish and non-Jewish). Although I have a feeling that my fondness for tirimisu (which was one of the possible answers to a question about dessert) is mostly responsible.
My results on a 2008 Presidential Candidate Matching Quiz:

Not exctly a surprise ... but it did clarify some of the diffs between my top choices.
It was bound to happen sometime ... .
