Quotes Meme

It's been a mildly woeful Wednesday, so let's have a meme. This one is ganked from kispexi2's ... you go to this here random quotes page, check out the quotes that come up, and keep refreshing until you've collected five quotes that really resonate with you, then post 'em to your journal.

Books to the ceiling,
Books to the sky,
My pile of books is a mile high.
How I love them! How I need them!
I'll have a long beard by the time I read them.

- Arnold Lobel

Love much. Earth has enough of bitter in it.

- Ella Wheeler Wilcox

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

-George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)

Holding onto anger is like grasping onto a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else. You are the one who gets burned.

- Gotama Buddha

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.

- Anaïs Nin (1903 - 1977)

Hmmm ... what a strange batch that is!

That is a rather strange batch! I really loved #1. (That one may be fitting for a lot of folks out here in blogland....) ^_^

Hee, yes! I think Lobel was clearly One of Us.

That Nin quote is making me think yet again that you really should watch Utena one of these years...

(The manga is nowhere near as wonderful and complex, alas!)

Oddly enough, Utena is the favorite anime of a rather cynical chap on the Shejidan board. I was rather blown away when I heard that!

I picked the Nin quote because I feel that I've been taking chances with my heart to some extent on LJ, because I couldn't go on living as I was (drying up from lack of like minds around me), and it's been worth it.

Mmmm, well, scratch a cynic and you'll often find a bruised romantic idealist. (Ouch, where did I leave the calamine lotion...?)

> tries hard to imagine theta9 as a romantic idealist ... . <

The first one is so cute :) And I love the third one, very true. Now you made me want to do this meme too...

Shaw was a fascinating character, cynical and yet optimistic.

So do the meme, then! I will warn you that it seems to bring a lot of the same quotes up each time you re-start it. I think its randomizing algorithm isn't very good.

The "books" one made me smile. And the Shaw one -- oh yeah!

Those two seem to have spoken to many of the f-list!

ah, I love the Books one.
and Anais Nin has another great saying I saw the other day:

We don't see things as they are; we seem them as we are.

>> We don't see things as they are; we seem them as we are.<<

That's a really good one! I've sometimes said much the same thing much less elegantly as "everyone sees the world through 'me'-colored glasses."

Clearly Arnold has visited my house. ;)(Although I read all my books, they just are everywhere.)

I like the Anais Nin one also.

meganbmoore had a little poll/discussion thingy a while back on "which parts of my apartment do NOT contain books?". At the time, the only negative spaces I could think of were a couple of the closets, and the hallway...and you've seen what just filled up the hallway.

I think the universe is telling me I should cosplay as Tenpou at some point. Or perhaps the message is just "you need more bookshelves"...

We definitely need more bookshelves. But the basement is the logical place, and it needs lots of work.

Same here - I'm cautious enough about what I buy that I almost never spend money on something and then not read it.

But the addition of a manga-reading habit to the SF&F and kidlit habit has definietly challenged our ability to house books properly!

The Nin one has to do with the existence of my LJ - which felt very much like leaving my heart out for comment when I started it - and the fact that I'm actually letting people see my inner thoughts through fic.
