1. Tell you why I friended you.
Well, Saiyuki, clearly, but when was it? I see that I commented on a post you made about flowers to symbolize Gojyo back in 2008 ... but I think I first became aware of you through that illustration you made for devikun's "Something Borrowed." I probably decided to friend you once I had had a bit of a talk with you about Our Boys, because there is never too much 585 love and besides, I didn't want to miss any more pretty pictures.

2. Associate you with something.
Gojyo in lingerie! Because nobody does it better than you do!

3. Tell you something I like about you.
Aside from your Mad Art Skillz? The way you ravel threads - I mean, when you start with one idea and just keep following it to more and more fascinating points and ideas ... or silly ones, which can be just as awesome.

4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
I felt rather inspired myself by the request you made for input on Victorian working class men!

5. Associate you with a character/pairing.
Well, duh, 585! (You also like those WK dudes - Crawford and Schuldig?)

6. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
What do you like to read when you're not reading fanfiction or researching for art projects?

7. Tell you my favorite userpic of yours.
This one:
a close-up of one of Gojyo's eyes

8. Ask you to post this in your own journal.
As you wish ... .

Aw, thank you! XD

What do you like to read when you're not reading fanfiction or researching for art projects?

Honestly, I have become an AO3 *junkie* this year, so it's really been pretty exclusively fanfiction. I'm starting to worry it has ruined me for stories cultivated by publishing houses and printed out and bound within a cover. (Seriously, the crap that is published! It makes me furious!) Or maybe I just can't find new books to read that satisfy me. (And not just because I haven't taken the time to seek out the intersection of quality literature and gay men in love. Orrrr maybe that's exactly it, idk. XD ) So when I'm not on AO3 I find myself returning to dogeared copies of early William Gibson novels, some PG Wodehouse... Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe... Haruki Murakami. Old, old (but soothing) territory.

tl;dr: I think the last novel I picked up that I liked was probably... The City and the City by China Miéville. Very interesting. I don't need to own it, but I appreciated it.

1. Tell you why I friended you.
Saiyuki! (I think that's going to be the answer for the majority of these!) I think you commented on some of my stories, then I commented on some of yours, and then I decided I didn't want to miss any others you might write.

2. Associate you with something.
Utterly adorable pictures of Gojyo and Hakkai ... but especially Gojyo.

3. Tell you something I like about you.
You are so downright and frank, and yet warm at the same time.

4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
Worrying about you when you were on that term in the U.S. with the bad living situation. :-(

5. Associate you with a character/pairing.
Hah, 585.

6. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
How did you get into manga?

7. Tell you my favorite userpic of yours.
Right here:

8. Ask you to post this in your own journal.
Hee, you already did!

6. Hmmm... I first got into anime. When I was a kid, in Spain there were Japanese animes on TV after school. I got OBSESSED with Saint Seiya. I still think it's a wondrous series, filled with noble characters ready to sacrifive themselves to save the world. There were not like American superheroes, they were actually quite weaker than their opponents and they only ended up winning because they never surrendered, they were too stubborn and their cause was too important to give up on it. I was so in love with them... The animation and character design was gorgeous, too. I'm still besotted with it. But I digress. The thing was that I got addicted to Japanese anime, then. And only later (ten years later?), did I learn that they actually came from comic books called manga and that they were starting to be sold in Spain, too, so I got into it and ended up liking it much better than the animation counterpart (except for Saint Seiya, which is still far better as an anime than as a manga).

So, you see, I barely remember a time when I was not into this thing.

I think I first heard about manga in college, when one of my SCA/gameplaying friends was reading Lone Wolf and Cub. That was in the late 1970s, so he was really ahead of the times here in the U.S. And I watched Astro Boy and Kimba when I was little. But I didn't started reading manga myself until about 6 years ago.

1. Tell you why I friended you.
I think ... it was because of your Saiyuki Kink Meme, for which I wrote the first ever naughty fiction I ever wrote. (At the time, I blamed the painkillers I was on.) Plus, I had seen you around at telophase's and on various social justice posts. It was an irresistible combination!

2. Associate you with something.
Gardening. And Pookie.

3. Tell you something I like about you.
You see beauty in so many things, and no matter what happens, you pick yourself up and get going again.

4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
Getting your degree. I felt so proud, and yet kind of silly, because it wasn't like I had had anything to do with it!

5. Associate you with a character/pairing.
All of the Saiyuki boys.

6. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
Is Hakkai actually your favorite Saiyuki character? (All right, that's a pretty silly question ... .)

7. Tell you my favorite userpic of yours.
Just your usual one, because I associate you with it so strongly that I've always been surprised by actual pictures of you:
Hakkai from the manga Saiyuki

Have you always lived in your current area? (And if that's too personal - this is an unlocked post - which Tarot cards would you identify with the individual Sanzo ikkou? We had a discussion here about that ages ago, when I was first getting into the fandom, and I didn't know you then.)

The answer to #6 is #2! My daughter and I started going to powwows on our own in May of 1993, and (typical me) within three months I was helping out at powwows and involved in two local NA organizations, and by the Fall I was secretary of one. Meanwhile, I had gotten very interested both in powwow music and in the Lakota language, and the drum group in our area that I thought was far and away the best one sang primarily traditional Lakota songs. At that time they were affiliated with an Explorer Post, and since enough of us were interested, the lead singer, who spoke pretty fluent Lakota, offered to teach classes at the post. My girlfriend and I signed up, and the following Spring we got up our nerve to ask the powwow drum group if we could start learning to sing with them. (At this point I was already working on my first set of dance clothes, too - of course, looking back, I see they were dreadful! *lol*).

Anyway, the lead singer lived in the same neighborhood as my girlfriend and another couple we were very good friends with, and we all started hanging out together a lot. I always thought the lead singer guy was very nice, and I knew was obviously very knowledgable about NA stuff, but one day he started joking around, quoting huge swathes of Shakespeare off the top of his head - but doing it all in these brilliant funny voices, like Goofy and Elvis- and I was like, WTF?! who is this guy?!? We started talking about stuff other than NA things and found out we had a lot in common - and I already knew he was a really good person, very high integrity, for a number of reasons I won't go into here, so I became intrigued with him on a whole new level.

So I sort of just started watching him, made a point of being around and being helpful, eventually we went to some Shakespeare plays together, and slowly things just kind of developed. Neither of us is actually each other's physical "type", I'm six yrs. older than him and four inches taller, etc. - but it didnt seem to matter. It definitely convinced me that a relationship that starts as friends is the way to go! We got together in 1995, and got married in 2000 - he proposed to me two years into my health problems, despite all that drama, my being suddenly unemployed, etc. - I tried to tell him he was nuts, but he insisted.

So... I guess that's.... long story long? Certainly not long story short. But an answer to your question, at any rate. *lol* I am way overdue to do several posts in my journal, and will try to remember to add a posting of this meme to the list! Thanks for all your answers - kind and thoughtful, as ever! ♥

5. It amuses me that so many people I know because of our mutual love for Saiyuki cite Eiri and Shuichi and not Sanzo and Goku. I assume that's because Sanzo/Goku is not the only Saiyuki pairing I write about whereas with Gravitation, Eiri and Shuichi are pretty much it.
6. It depends on how you define fandom. If by that you mean inspired to create fanworks, it would be Gravitation. If you mean a fan devoted enough to buy most of the books written about or based on the show, including a few scholarly ones, and to follow websites with links to news and commentary on the show and its actors, that would be Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff, Angel.
7. Are you familiar with Bloom County, the comic strip it comes from?
8. I like to get the perspectives of friends who participated in the meme when I did it.

I remember Bloom County, an the way it was never afraid to tackle tough issues. I don't remember this particular strip.

I think that it's because so many of my friends are from Saiyuki fandom that your interest in Gravitation stands out. I have other friends who are interested in other fandoms, but in many cases, it's TV fandoms that I don't know, so the details don't stick in my mind. In this case, Eiri/Shuichi, I know exactly who you mean, and it matches up so well with Sanzo/Goku also.

I have actually watched a couple of episodes of Buffy and Angel! I couldn't tell you which ones, though ... .

I don't know which strip that image is from, either. Bloom County is my favorite comic strip ever. I own just about all of the books.

6. I do enjoy my current job, mainly because they have a fun working environment :P so I don't always have to be entirely "job appropriately" but If I changed jobs I would want it to be anything to do with Japan, it would be working in Japan but idealy I'd love to work for JTB the Japan Travel Bureau as there is a Melbourne office and it would allow me to live here but work in Japan some months of the year. That why I'm learning Japanese :)

I am so sorry!

1. Tell you why I friended you.
Saiyuki again! And back in those days, I was very, very shy about friending people, too. But I loved your 585 stories and really wanted to know whenever you wrote another one.

2. Associate you with something.
Aide from 585? Those very interesting color combos on your LJ layouts ... .

3. Tell you something I like about you.

6. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.

Oh I like questions to do with the outernets! I only must not seem to share much because I don't post much and I hardly ever have anything to say when I do. But you can ask me stuff any time!

When I'm not reading manga - and honestly, I've been reading less and less manga recently - I tend almost towards genre fantasy fiction. I first started back when I was, um, 15, with The Hobbit (didn't everyone?) and more surprisingly perhaps, The Thomas Covenant Chronicles. I've read a lot of fairly pedestrian stuff since then, but I've read some things that have hit me right between the eyes as well.

These days I'm incredibly picky in what I will read, since I feel like I've read too much and it's become all too rote. I basically only stick to a limited number of sure-hit authors now - KJ Parker being foremost of these. He/she does a sort of cold military fantasy fiction I find absolutely fascinating and even a little horrifying. It's awesome.

I also regularly mix it up with random reading in completely unrelated genres, although even there I lean towards crime stuff or detective-y type stuff. I will also read just about anything involving zombies or post-apocalypses. Just recently read Colson Whitehead's Zone One, a very non-typical zombie apocalypse story with utterly dazzling writing and very post modern substance.
