Takoma Park Farmer's Market Haul

Items purchased at a farmers market; read description below

Clockwise from lower center: Juliet mini-tomatoes, green beans, assorted apples (Jonamac, Jonagold, Grimes Golden, etc.) and Bartlett pears, tatsoi greens, country white bread (for the Mr.'s toast), brown eggs, and in the center, assorted heirloom tomatoes.

(And the resolution on the camera phone really does suck: I've been working on editing photos taken with the big Nikon in the last couple of months, and the difference just springs out and waves "Hi." I've reduced the display size here on the fly with HTML so that it doesn't look too awful.)

That is so cool. I'm told 80% of our apple crop was destroyed by an April frost this year and we shall have to import at great cost.

How sad! Yeah, the frost happened to a bunch of U.S. areas too. I was doing an article for our intranet on "pick your own" places, and that means checking in all the areas where we have remote offices. And a bunch of the farms were saying that they had no apples this year.

I think that's what the little ones are - they were called "Juliet" tomatoes!

Oooooh, that looks wonderful!

May I ask a favor? Can you tell me if the Grimes Goldens are tasty? They're a recommended apple variety for pollinating other apple trees. I'm thinking of putting in a pair of apples so I'd love to hear if this variety is tasty or not (choosing apple varieties is kind of wonderfully complicated, it turns out).

I'll see and let you know - I recall them as being good last year, which is why I got some, but I don't remember very well! (It's sad.)

The ones I'm really waiting for are Ginger Gold, which are rich and tart at the same time. But they're a late apple, so they're not ready yet.
