All the sudden, when I comment, I have kajillion options for FB, Twitter, and all that stuff. What gives? Can I turn it off?

Something weird's up, I couldn't get the main page to work right either.
Sep. 1st, 2011 02:23 am (UTC)

main page ==> What, the thing that you get when you hit "Home" on the LJ top menu bar?

Sep. 1st, 2011 02:28 am (UTC)
I think so, just livejournal.com.
Sep. 1st, 2011 02:42 am (UTC)

Hmm, this is all very odd. The search doesn't look quite the same either.

Sep. 1st, 2011 05:17 pm (UTC)

Writer Nick Mamatas was seeing it too. It went away for him after a while. I'll have to see whether mine is all better at home this evening.

Sep. 1st, 2011 11:42 pm (UTC)
I'm not getting it in journal entries, but I was still getting it when I tried to post anonymously a bit ago. What a pain.
Sep. 2nd, 2011 03:00 am (UTC)

Mine's better now! How about yours in nonny mode?

Sep. 3rd, 2011 12:39 am (UTC)
It's working again! Very strange.
Sep. 3rd, 2011 05:27 pm (UTC)

Yeah, lawless523 and indelicateink were both complaining about changes to the RTE window, which I don't use (except on the cellphone), and both say that's cleared up too.

LJ's been showing those when you're logged out for months now, I think--they're trying to make it easier for people to log in and comment with OpenID from other services, I think. As far as I know there's no way to turn it off, but it should only be an issue when you're logged out or trying to comment anon or with a different account while logged in.
Sep. 1st, 2011 02:22 am (UTC)

Well, I'm logged in right now, and I'm seeing them even as I reply to you here.

I also tried logging into my writing account with Safari (I use FF for this account), and the same thing is going on.

You're not seeing all those options when you reply?

Sep. 1st, 2011 02:32 am (UTC)
I see them if I click on the userhead next to my username--it gives me the options to

anon comment
comment as another LJ account
comment using FB/Twitter/OpenID/GoogleID/a couple Russian services

It has been showing me this for months; they changed it back when they made commenting automatically log you into the site (which I still hate, and I wish I could turn off all the options except anon and alternate account). But it doesn't visually show me the options until I click on the userhead, upon which it shows a dropdown menu.

If it's showing them when you HAVEN'T clicked on the userhead, I'm guessing it might be a glitch with some browsers, since I have seen a bunch of people Suddenly Noticing the options lately.
Sep. 1st, 2011 02:40 am (UTC)

Oh, that is so weird. I might have accidentally clicked the userhead once, but not over and over!

FF just informed me that I have a minor upgrade to run. Maybe that will fix it. But why it happened all the sudden with Safari as well ... .

Sep. 1st, 2011 02:43 am (UTC)
Hmmm. I would suggest taking a screenshot in whatever browsers you're seeing it in and submitting a support request with browser info, then. It's entirely possible that LJ updated something and it didn't work quite right in all browsers. Are you seeing a permanently expanded drop-down menu or something else?
Sep. 1st, 2011 02:46 am (UTC)

Yeah, I think that's what I have. And it has a couple of links as part of it - Other user -and- Back to chomiji - that don't seem to work at all.

Well, if it's still funky tomorrow, I will do what you say. For now, I'm fading fast (not much sleep this week). Thanks!

Sep. 1st, 2011 05:18 pm (UTC)

Writer Nick Mamatas was seeing it too - he posted a screencap, and that's exactly what mine looked like. At home this evening, I'll have to see whether mine is all better, as his is.

Sep. 1st, 2011 07:22 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that looks like a bug to me. I don't think LJ's user-interface people are that out-of-touch. I hope. And I'm definitely not seeing it.
Sep. 2nd, 2011 02:59 am (UTC)

It's all fixed now! Thank goodness ... !

Sep. 1st, 2011 02:44 am (UTC)

Well, so much for that theory. I ran the upgrade and it's still like this. Hmmph.

Sep. 1st, 2011 02:48 am (UTC)
I've heard of some similar bugginess on other f-list journals, altho I'm too tired to remember who right now. But it's not just you!
Sep. 1st, 2011 05:19 pm (UTC)

Yes, I just saw that Nick Mamatas was having it too. I'll have to see whether mine is all better at home this evening, as his is.

I don't see those options automatically if I just click "Reply" or "Leave Comment" in Firefox or Chrome -- I don't even get a dropdown option to the side of the userhead. If I want to see those options, I have to select the "More Options" button to the right of "Post Comment" under the text entry input box. (Hitting "More Options" makes the dropdown arrow appear by the userhead, and replaces the "More Options" button with a "Preview" button -- but it doesn't display all of the Facebook/OpenID/etc. options unless I select the dropdown arrow.

In IE, it also doesn't display the options automatically, but the dropdown arrow next to the userhead does display by default -- basically, the top-level interface I get there automatically is the same thing I see in Firefox or Chrome if I select "More Options". And even if I'm logged out, I don't see all of those things displaying automatically in IE or Chrome -- the default view I get when logged out is just like the one in IE, with the dropdown arrow next to the userhead.

(This is all on a Win7 PC -- I can check on Vista and XP in a little bit if you like, to help narrow down if this might be something specific to your Mac version of FF...)

It seems that writer Nick Mamatas had the same experience, but it went away (his post includes a screen cap). I'll see whether mine is still borked this evening. (IE at work shows no sign of it.)

Sep. 1st, 2011 10:29 pm (UTC)
I'm seeing people elsewhere talking about it being a CSS glitch.
Sep. 2nd, 2011 02:50 am (UTC)

And ... now it's all gone! I was frantically answering stuff and didn't even notice!

See this post (writer Nick Mamatas) - he had the same issue and has included a screen cap. He reports that it's all better - I'll see how mine looks this evening.

All better now, thank God!

Sep. 1st, 2011 07:54 am (UTC)
Do you have crossposting enabled in your settings? If so you can turn that off, should fix the problem. Theoretically ;)
Sep. 1st, 2011 05:26 pm (UTC)

No, apparently it was something else - see this post by writer Nick Mamatasa (includes a screen cap). I'll see whether mine is still borked this evening. (IE at work shows no sign of it.)

Thanks, though!

You know, I hadn't even thought about the other page thing, but you're right. It was doing that, too.

It's all better for me now. Yours is still doing it?

Random speculation: I know different LJs are on different servers (if you file a technical complaint, you can see the name of your server ... they have goofy names, but that's a techie tradition), and I think that changes take a while to propagate throughout the server farm. So we were all getting hit with updates at different times, and depending which browser and platform we had, the screw-up either showed or didn't.

Sep. 1st, 2011 11:32 pm (UTC)
I started having this problem maybe half an hour after you reported it, but it's gone. Now there's no RTE when I try to post and I don't know (or care to know) how to post images using HTML, especially since I don't have and don't want to have a third-party picture hosting site account.
Sep. 2nd, 2011 02:55 am (UTC)

See my note on your LJ. It looks to me like the new default posting mode is Rich Text, and there are two little buttons for embedding media and inserting pictures. If you want HTML, you check a box above the text window.

BTW, you can do HTML image insertion with LJ Scrapbook pix. I do it fairly often here.

Sep. 2nd, 2011 07:36 am (UTC)
I don't see those buttons, nor do I have a check box for using HTML.

So how do you use Rich Text functions like undo without icons? And why don't we see announcements of these things until long afterward? I'm only subscribed to LJ news and LJ maintenance, though; maybe there's something else I should be subscribed to be in the know?

I'm one of the people least easily offended by LJ's lack of communication, having dealt with insurance companies and other behemoths of bureaucracy and the like for a living, I like the graphics and most of the functionality at LJ better than DW, and and like you, I find the painful sincerity and overly folksy manner of the those in charge of DW offputting, but this is kind of ridiculous.

As for using HTML and LJ's scrapbook, that's not a particularly good option for me if I'm posting more than a couple of images at a time. By comparison to RTE, using HTML and LJ scrapbook is a horrible, stinky choice for someone like me with disabilities affecting our hands, wrists, arms, and shoulders and concentration. If I can't use RTE, for anything more than a couple of pictures, it's the equivalent of having the ability to post pictures taken away.
Sep. 2nd, 2011 12:02 pm (UTC)

"Undo" (CTRL+Z, or Command+Z on a Mac) is a system function, not an application-specific function. So you should have it regardless.

But it looks like you either got your old RTF interface back or figured it out on the new one?

I have a feeling that their original releases of software are unofficial Betas. So everyone basically does mass testing for them, then they pop out the last few bugs discovered that way, and announce the new code.

You're right, it's back. I never had what you described. Thanks for the info; I've only memorized because it's easier on my easily overloaded brain to rely on something I can see; I prefer to avoid the havoc that can ensue if I get it wrong. That's another reason I like RTE better than HTML (though I code and paste stories in HTML; it works better).

You're probably right. Did they ever consider that making us unofficial beta testers spoils the experience and drives people away? They should ask if people want to be beta testers. Also, given the number of bugs, it doesn't seem like they tested them very effectively. As it was, I had to do my post in two chunks because the upload screen wouldn't come up when I tried to upload the second photo the first time.

*hugs back*
