Hurricane Cooking

So the psychology of this is probably a bit of a mess, but I fought Hurricane Irene this evening by making a big home-cooked meal. Of course, if the power had cut out in the middle of this, things would have been totally wrecked - but it didn't.

I made roast chicken, gravy, mashed potatoes, and (the loser of the menu) mixed veg. And a flank steak. The Mr. was like "I suppose the flank steak is dessert?" No, it just needed to be cooked (it was the last of last week's grocery run), so I put it out on the table with the rest.

(Somehow I couldn't be arsed to poke around the veg section at Whole Foods this afternoon - I'm not sure why. Usually I'm OK with veg.)

Maybe you couldn't stand the thought of the veg possibly going off?

Meat's a lot more disgusting when it goes than veg is ... . I didn't buy an awful of fresh anything, except fruit that's OK for a while a room temperature (I bought a whole sack of clementines, for example). But somehow I just didn't feel like evaluating veg and examining them. It is a puzzlement. It might be that it's because a lot of them are bulky before they're prepped, and they would be troublesome to fit in a cooler if we had to go that route.

You cooked the meat, though! I bought carrots 'cause I figured they would keep but that was it.

True ... but the cold meat will probably get eaten over the next couple of days. I seem to be the only person in our house who eats cold veg!

I love eggplant, but the other two don't. But it turns out they brought me back some eggplant stuffed with shrimp from their lunch (they started moving the Young Lady's stuff back to school while I was dealing with bunny cremation arrangements this morning, so they went out to lunch together afterward). I didn't find out about it until after dinner - I thought it was leftover pork buns or something. It's especially touching given that neither of them eats it. I'll have to have it for lunch tomorrow.
