Interesting stuff, tho' I had to skim somewhat for spoiler-avoidance and am so out of touch on more recent fantasy that I can't really follow along with many of the examples or comment intelligently; that overall "these GIRLS are DOING THINGS WRONG" pattern certainly seems similar things I've seen in other geeky spheres, of course!

In a similar vein, have you seen this post yet, rather aptly skewering yet another example of fuddy-duddy "KIDS THESE DAYS ARE RUINING FANDOM/GEEK CULTURE" handwringing? All that stuff about growing up as a "feral geek"/"geek culture of one" due to the limitations of geographic and economic access all rang so very very painfully familiar and true to me -- that part may not resonate quite as strongly with you, but the bits about the internet finally making it possible to find a more female-centric alternative to male-dominated geek culture spaces will probably hit close to home. There's some good stuff in the comments, too, noting how there have always been POC geek circles off doing their own thing...)
