I Deleted My First Spam as a Mod!

Over at dianawynnejones LJ comm.

>shoots little flames from fingertips<

>buff nails<

This was "Beautiful Russian Women!" spam ... much more blatant and less sneaky than the Halloween Costumes spam I saw on another comm yesterday.

Yeah, the same ad was on the Saiyuki comm. These spammers are something, alright ... .

Yeah, it showed up on one of the Eroica comms that's been hit before. And one of the fishy-looking new subscribers on the cranes comm that I didn't approve for posting access is now showing up as a suspended account, just like several others I've seen subscribing and turning up suspended shortly thereafter. They're using a fairly consistent username pattern, it seems, which makes it easy to spot the new subscribers who need to be squinted at a bit more closely.

Um, any chance you remember the username? Then I could add them to my Banned list which will probably be entirely superfluous, since it's not like I'm modding anything large enough to attract spambots, but ...

Shoot, no, I don't remember. I'm new to this modding stuff ... next time I'll save that info.

See below, nee-chan...while it's worthwhile to keep records on someone who seems to be making trouble out of some sort of personal animus, like You-Know-Who with the creepy email harassment, I wouldn't waste my time in that way on these sorts of pro spammers; they typically create disposable accounts with free services/trial periods/stolen credit cards, and don't even try to go back to them once one has been nuked; they just switch to the next one in the quiver.

I doubt they'll try coming back under the same name -- the M.O. seems to be creating large numbers of disposable accounts, having them sign up for a squillion comms, and then just moving on to the next one when one gets nuked. They typically go for usernames with a "female given name + numbers" format and the ones I've seen before they got nuked have empty journals, nothing in their profiles but a million unrelated community subscriptions, and just one icon of some scantily-clad and cleavage-focused young woman.
