This is surprisingly addicting, even though I can't understand much more than the character's names and a very few words (like onna - "woman"):

Hakkai (well, Gonou in these scenes) is completely adorable, and the scene where he's telling his story to Gojyo is quite close to the manga, I think - complete with Gojyo holding up his pinkie yakuza-style to mean a woman when he asks about the person Gonou has lost.

I don't think the pinky gesture is a yakuza thing -- all of the references I've seen say it's just a way of indicating a girlfriend, wife, or female lover (for a male love interest it would be the thumb instead). So when Gojyo's making that sign while saying "onna" he's wordlessly indicating that she was a lover, not just any woman.

And the guys are really well-cast for the most part -- Doku's too skinny, of course, but the ikkou in particular are wonderful, their body language is dead-on...and Hakkai is just disturbingly pretty.

Yeah, I could watch Hakkai do push-ups for. Um. A long time.

...I'll be in my bunk.

The push-ups thing was a bit weird ... I was like, "what part of 'Be There' is this supposed to be?"

XD

I think that's probably him proving to Gojyo that he's recovered enough to move on?

It's Friday! But it's more a sort of intertia setting in ... . I'm also watching the http://community.livejournal.com/fight_derailing/ thing about Wiscon ... .

I am starting to get my usual up-too-late spikes-through-the-temples headache.

I was thinking he was doing something else so Gojyo wouldn't think he was cheating at cards. Might be both!

Of course we all know he's really just using the fitness or non-cheating demo excuse as a cover-up for cunningly giving the kappa a chance to get a good eyeful of those pert little buns. Wheels within wheels!

He's not stupid, our Hakkai.

Got room for company in that handbasket? XD

They're all ridiculously cute, but Hakkai's bone structure is just...dayumn. It's such an amazingly androgynous beauty, just the sort of thing I'd imagine for the character: with looks like that, no wonder Gojyo calls him "bijin"...

It's surprisingly roomy!

I'm amazed at how quickly you get used to them being 'real,' too. And...yeah. Damn.

The casting director definitely deserves a big fat bonus. The guys all really have the right sort of looks for their characters, and even voices are decent matches -- Hakkai doesn't quite have that perfect honeyed-velvet tone of Ishida Akira, which is probably a good thing since he's already reaching dangerously unbearable levels of attractiveness; but Gojyo even sounds a little like Hiroaki Hirata. And the body language, eek...that perfect kicked-puppy look when the kappa's having that voiceover flashback to Mommy Dearest absolutely breaks my heart.

One of my other someday-I'll-write-it essays is on how damn well Minekura captures that abused-kid feel...and it's amazing that they manage to make it work on stage too.

Oh man, I would be ALL OVER THAT if you ever do write it up. Her handling of trauma issues in general, and the various ways the guys cope, is amazing to start with, but Gojyo in particular just rings so painfully familiar and true.

Ah, what would I do without my smilla-san to set me straight? Thank you ... I clearly mis-remembered that about the pinkie.

:-)

The problem with the files of the musical is that the person who put them up arbitrarily broke them into 10-minute segments ... yes, I'm so picky about my free entertainment! But they really are fun to watch.

That's not arbitrary -- 10 minutes is the maximum length allowed on YT, so the vids had to be split.

Well, but there might have been more natural breaks than the literal 10-minute marks. (It would have made more files, of course.)

Oh, yes, I'm fussy enough that the few times I've had to edit down video I had to try to go for spots that didn't cut into the middle of something -- but that's more work along with more files; I can't blame 'em for going for the path of least resistance for something this big!

I am saddened by how polite and quiet the theater is!

I know! But it would have been distracting if the fangirls had been throwing their unmentionables on stage ... .

It almost makes me wonder if they were doing some sort of pre-show "we're taping tonight, please be extra-quiet" announcement?

And I suspect Japanese theater-etiquette culture might lean enough toward the quiet side to negate loud fangirlish squee somewhat -- I watch a lot of Takarazuka clips on YouTube and I can't recall ever hearing crowd noises other than polite applause...

Speaking of Takarazuka ... I'm pretty sure I showed this to smilla one time when she was visiting, but I think you would enjoy it very much. It's sanada's screen caps of and pricelessly snarky commentary on a big Takarazuka production.

Put some of those actresses in a lineup with our Hakkai there, and you'd be pretty hard-pressed to guess who was which ... nor would you care, I imagine!

Bwa-ha-ha...yes, you did show me that once, but now I can memory it properly! *glees*

Is it just me, or do Susano-o and Kougaiji seem to be patronizing the same tailor? ;)

(And the Takarazukienne who played Tyrian Persimmon in a musical adaptation of one of Yasuko Aoike's manga would make a fine girl!Hakkai...)

Awww! I would have loved to know all about what you thought!

I like the Gojyo guy, although I haven't seen him do a real Gojyo Grin yet. He seems to be better at the serious expressions.

Ok let's give this another try (and this time I'll save my comment before hitting "post"!). Actually I ended up watching the whole thing after you posted this, and I have to say I really fell in love with Goku. He can't have been much younger than the other actors, right? But despite that he still brought across all of Goku's childishness and excitement, I thought that was great. I really loved Hakkai too, that guy was just perfect for the part. Even without understanding anything, the way he talked seemed just very Hakkai-like to me.

But you're right, a Gojyo grin or really any kind of lighter moment would have been nice. I mean I loved all the angst and drama, but what's Saiyuki without the fun? Maybe that just got lost in the non-existant translation. But overall, I really liked it.

I'm glad you located it! Enjoy!

You might want to join/watch the saiyuki_news community - it's pretty good at picking up this sort of stuff from all the Saiyuki LJ comms and posting it every day - everything from icons dumps and doujinshi for sale through new fanfic and new chapters in scans/translations. That's where I first saw these videos.
